How To Move App To Dock In Mac

The row of apps at the bottom of the iPhone or iPad Home screen is called the dock. Apple has placed some popular apps in the dock for quick and easy access. If there are other apps you would rather have in the dock, it is easy to change the apps to suit your needs. Many people prefer to put their most frequently used apps in the dock.

  • Mac OS X also has a couple of ways to pin your most used items to the dock: Drag the program, file, or folder icon to the dock and wait for the icons in the dock to move to make room for the new icon.
  • To add running apps to your Dock permanently, right-click on an app icon in the Dock, hover over Options, then click Keep in Dock. You can also remove surplus apps from your Dock using the same menu. For system apps, right-click the app icon, then click Options Remove from Dock.

To move an app to or from the dock, tap and hold any app on the Home screen. All the apps will begin to “wiggle.” This is an editing mode that allows you to rearrange the apps by dragging them around onscreen. While the apps are wiggling, you can drag apps on and off the dock.

The iPhone dock can hold a maximum of four apps and the iPad dock can hold up to six. If the dock is full and you want to move a new app into the dock, you will first need to move an app out of the dock.

How

The easiest way to add something to the Dock is to launch the program, then click-hold the mouse for a second or two until the menu pops up. While still holding down the mouse, move the cursor to “Options” and That’s the choice you want.

Remove an App From the Dock

Tap and hold your finger on any app until all the apps start to wiggle. Once the apps are wiggling, you can remove an app from the dock by simply dragging the app out of the dock and placing it anywhere on the Home screen.

Add an App to the Dock

While the apps are still wiggling, you can add an app or a folder to the dock by dragging the app or folder from the Home screen to the dock.

Some apps have a small “X” in the top left corner of the icon. Tapping the X will delete the app.

When you are finished moving apps, press the Home button to exit the edit mode. This will cause the apps to stop wiggling.

How To Move App To Dock In Mac Catalina

In summary this is what we are going to do; create a folder and move your favorite apps’ aliases (like shortcut in Windows Operating System), then move the folder with these app aliases to the dock- very simple.

1) Create a folder; make sure you do not delete it later. We will be moving the required apps shortcuts in to this folder.

2) Now open the ‘Application’ folder (Go –> Applications) and select the apps you need to move to the newly created folder then to the dock as group.

You have to press and hold ‘Command’ key while selecting the apps (it is like holding Ctrl key in Windows OS while selecting the icons).

3) Now we need to move this selection of icons to the new folder (which we created earlier). DO NOT just drag and drop, if you do like that, the entire apps (including all files of the app) will be moved to the folder. But our purpose is to just copy the aliases ( a small file which refer to original app icon).

Therefore, press and hold ‘Options’ and ‘Command’ key while dragging these apps from Application folder to new folder.

Since the aliases are very small, the copying will be over within few seconds. If it takes longer, then I’m sure something wrong with your move and mostly all files of the apps will be copied now (that is not what we wanted here). Also, make sure the aliases (like shortcuts in Windows OS) mark is there in every icon you have moved.

4) We have done the major part now. Now you can drag and drop the folder to the dock. Make sure you drop near ‘Downloads’ or ‘Trash’ in the dock (extreme right).

You should see the stacked group of apps on your Yosemite Mac OS X dock now.

This is the simple method to group your favorite apps to the dock and manage it properly in Mac OS X 10.10. If these icons look empty, you may need to restart your Mac computer to make it work.

This method is applicable for all Apple computers including MacBook Pro and Mac Pro desktop which running on Yosemite OS X 10.10 or earlier versions such as Mavericks and Mountain Lion.
